Apart from bleeding which occurs through the involvement of a blood vessel in a disease process like tuberculosis of the lung producing haemoptysis or a Peptic ulcer producing haematemesis, bleeding can also occur due to defective mechanism of haemostasis.

The bleeding occurs in these mechanisms: -

• Active vasoconstriction at the site of the tear in the vessel.
• Followed by plugging of the tear by platelet aggregation.
