Chilblains are abnormal reaction to cold, which present as painful or itchy, erythematous and oedematus areas on the dorsa of the fingers and toes, nose and ears. The lesions usually change to dark brown colour. In severe cases blisters and ulceration may occur. The fingers and toes of these patients are cold to touch. The lesions tend to heal spontaneously in 7-14 days. However, recurrences are common as long as the cold season last. Thus it recurs every winter for a few years.

Chilblains usually develop several hours after exposure to the cold. They typically cause a burning and itching sensation in the affected areas, which can become more intense if you go into a warm room. The affected skin may also swell and turn red or dark blue. In severe cases, the surface of the skin may break and sores or blisters can develop.  It's important not to scratch the skin as it can break easily and become infected.

TREATMENT

These patients should be protected from cold by using warm water and woollen clothes during winter. Once chilblain has appeared, treatment is only symptomatic. Agar, Ars and Sulph are most frequently used medicine in homoeopathy.
