A condition that prevents absorption of nutrients through the small intestine.

SYMPTOMS: - Diarrhoea, loss of Weight, lethargy, steatorrhoea (stool fat increased, hard to flush away), bloating.

DEFICIENCY SIGNS: - Anaemia (Fe decreased, B12, folate), bleeding disorders (decreased vitamin k), oedema(decreased protein), metabolic bone disease(decreased vit D), neurological features like Neuropathy.

 TESTS: - FBC (decreased or increased MCV), decreased Ca2 , decreased Fe, decreased B12 folate.

Tropical malabsorption: - Guardian, Cryptosporidium, Isospora belli, Cyclospora cayetanensis, microsporidia.

Tropical sprue: - There is villious atrophy alongwith malabsorption.

SYMPTOMS: - weight loss, bloating, diarrhoea. Eventually brain, nervous system, bones, liver and other organs can be affected. People may experience pain in abdomen, flatulence, fat in stool, cramps.

Factors that may cause malabsorption syndrome include damage to the intestine from infection, inflammation, trauma(injury), or surgery, prolonged use of antibiotics.

Some disease conditions such as coeliac disease, crohn's disease, chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis.

Chronic diarrhoea is the most common symptom and is what usually prompts evaluation of the patient.

Steatorrhoea, fatty stool the hallmark of malabsorption occurs when more than 7gm/day of fat are excreted. Steatorrhoea causes foul smelling, pale, bulky, and greasy stools.
