Macrocytosis is common, often due to alcohol excess without any accompanying anaemia. Although only 5% are due to B12 Deficiency, pernicious anaemia is the most common cause of a macrocytic anaemia in western countries.

B12 and folate deficiencies are megaloblastic anaemias. A megaloblast is a cell in which nuclear maturation is delayed compared with the cytoplasm. This occurs with B12 and folate deficiencies,as they are both required for DNA synthesis.

CAUSES OF MACROCYTOSIS: -

B12 Deficiency, folate deficiencies, cytotoxic drugs, alcohol, reticulocytosis, liver disease, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, Myelodysplasia, aplastic anaemia etc.

TESTS: - B12 and folate Deficiency result in similar blood film and bone marrow biopsy appearances.

BLOOD FILM: Hyper segmented polymorphs in B12 and folate Deficiency.

OTHER TESTS: LFT, TFT, serum B12 and serum folate.

Bone marrow biopsy is indicated if the cause is not revealed by the above tests.

CONCLUSION: -

There are many Homoeopathic remedies which can very efficiently manage the disease condition, it's complications, it's symptoms and can help in preventing further progress of the disease.
