Moles are commonly known as pigmented naevi or Melanocytic Naevi. It may be present at birth. It usually appears in childhood and adolescence. It consists of naevus cells located at the dermo-epidermal junction in the dermis or at both these places. Clinically, they are seen in various forms corresponding to the site of naevus cells present in the skin. The most common variety presents as hyperpigmented macules of 1 mm to 1 cm in size located on any area of the body including palms, soles and mucosae of oral cavity and genitalia. These naevi remain unchanged throughout the life and are usually used as identification marks. The next common variety consists of a dome-shaped pigmented papules or nodules usually seen on the face. These are also known as pigmented moles. Many of these have a bunch of coarse hair growing on their surface. Majority of these naevi appear by adolescence.
