THE HYPER EOSINOPHILIC SYNDROME (HES)

It is a severe disease of unknown cause, in which an increased eosinophil count leads to an end organ damage (endomyocardial fibrosis, skin lesions, thromboembolic disease, lung disease, Neuropathy, and hepatosplenomegaly).

  • Eosinophils are increased in drug reactions, e.g. with erythema multiform.
  • Allergies: asthma, atopy.
  • Parasitic infections (especially invasive helminths).

SYMPTOMS: -

  • Difficulty in swallowing.
  • Food getting stuck in the oesophagus after swallowing, also known as impaction.
  • Chest pain that is often centrally located and doesn't respond to antacids.
  • Backflow of undigested food known as Regurgitation.

COMPLICATIONS: -

May include Respiratory disease, which may appear in about 40% of cases. The respiratory clinical manifestations maybe severe asthma, infiltrative pulmonary disease, pleural effusion, pulmonary embolism, or fibrosis.
