 It is a rare congenital respiratory system disorder caused by mutation in gene PHOX2B. The PHOX2B Gene is basically making a protein which is important for development of nerves and neurons. There is increase in carbon dioxide level in blood and decrease in oxygen, causing shortness of breath and hypoventilation especially during sleep. As Autonomic Nervous System has fully control on the Respiratory system normally, there will be grasping for breath and search for more ventilation. As the nerve is not functioning, the signal is not transferred to brain.
