C3 GLOMERULOPATHY (C3G)

 Is a rare group of kidney disorders characterized by abnormal activation of the complement system in the glomeruli of the kidneys. The glomeruli are tiny structures in the kidneys responsible for filtering blood and removing waste products from the body. The complement system is a part of the immune system that helps defend the body against infections, but when dysregulated, it can cause damage to the kidneys.

CAUSES AND PATHOPHYSILOGY C3 GLOMERULOPATHY (C3G)

• Genetic
• In C3 glomerulopathy, there is an excessive buildup of a protein called C3 in the glomeruli, leading to inflammation and damage. There are two main subtypes of C3G:
• Dense Deposit Disease (DDD): DDD is characterized by the deposition of dense material (C3 nephritic factor) within the glomeruli, leading to chronic inflammation and scarring.
• C3 Glomerulonephritis (C3GN): C3GN is characterized by the presence of C3 deposits in the glomeruli without the dense material seen in DDD. It is also associated with chronic inflammation and kidney damage.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS OF C3 GLOMERULOPATHY:

• Blood in the urine (hematuria)
• Proteinuria (excess protein in the urine)
• High blood pressure
• Edema (swelling), particularly around the eyes, ankles, and feet
• Decreased kidney function

Diagnosis of C3G involves a combination of clinical evaluation, blood and urine tests, kidney biopsy. The kidney biopsy is crucial for confirming the diagnosis and determining the specific subtype of C3G.
