MIKULICZ SYNDROME

Mikulicz syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by the abnormal enlargement of glands in the head and neck, including those near the ears (parotids) and those around the eyes (lacrimal) and mouth (salivary). The tonsils and other glands in the soft tissue of the face and neck may also be involved.

 SYMPTOMS OF MIKULICZ SYNDROME

  • Recurring fevers
  • Dry eyes
  • Diminished tear production
  • Inflammation of various parts of the eyes - (uveitis)
  • Lacrimal gland enlargement
  • Parotid gland enlargement
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes

CAUSES OF MIKULICZ SYNDROME

The exact cause of Mikulicz syndrome is still not fully understood,

Few associated conditions are as followed- leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, AIDs, syphilis, lupus and Sjögren syndrome.

It is said to be autoimmune in nature, leading to the accumulation of lymphocytes in the affected glands of the face, mouth and neck.

Bryonia - Dryness of mouth, tongue, and throat, with excessive thirst, Dryness, sticking on swallowing, scraped and constricted

Alumina - dryness of mucous membranes and skin, and tendency to paretic muscular states, -Objects look yellow. Eyes feel cold. Lids dry, burn, smart, thickened, aggravated in morning; chronic conjunctivitis. Ptosis.

Ammonium carb - Swelling of parts, glands, Burning of eyes with aversion to light. Enlarged tonsils and glands of neck. Burning pain all down throat

Pulsatilla - .--Thick, profuse, yellow, bland discharges. Itching and burning in eyes. Profuse lachrymation and secretion of mucus. Lids inflamed, agglutinated,fundus enlarged.
